**Noab Increases Newspaper Prices by Tk 2 Effective July 25**

In a recent announcement by the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (Noab), all newspapers under their ownership will experience a price hike of at least Tk 2 per issue starting July 25. This increase signifies significant adjustments for readers, with papers currently priced at Tk 10 per copy now being sold for Tk 12, and those at Tk 5 escalating to Tk 7.

**Challenges Faced by the Newspaper Industry**

The global newspaper industry has been grappling with various challenges, exacerbated by declining revenues from advertising and circulation, a scenario worsened by the impact of the 2020 pandemic. Despite these adversities, the prices of newspapers were held constant until now. Noab cited substantial cost escalations in their publication processes, with newsprint prices doubling over recent months compared to the first half of the previous year. Additionally, the surge in the US dollar exchange rate and escalating costs of printing essentials like ink and plates contributed to rising expenses.

**Seeking Government Assistance**

Noab has persistently sought governmental aid over the past months, but responses have fallen short of expectations. While other sectors received stimulus packages, the newspaper industry was overlooked in this year’s fiscal budget, with corporate tax, import duties, and VAT remaining unaltered. The cumulative effect of increased transportation expenses has further strained the financial viability of newspapers.

**Call for Cooperation**

Acknowledging the unparalleled crisis facing the industry, Noab appealed to readers and supporters for collaboration during these trying times. Emphasizing their commitment to delivering quality newspapers, the association sought solidarity from their audience to navigate through the challenges ahead.

Despite these changes, it’s worth noting that The Daily Star will not be affected by this price hike, having already been increased to Tk 15 on July 1.
